The fifth music style I’ve always wanted to try: Cycling Music.
The fifth music style I’ve always wanted to try: Cycling Music.
At this point, this “things-I-want-to-try” series is starting to feel like a sneaky excuse to keep myself practicing piano and working out regularly 😂
Honestly, the cycling series has been the hardest one so far. It took a lot of trial and error to get this prototype version right.
Huge thanks to dann and Jack for going along with my madness 😆
There are definitely areas that could be improved, but the more I watched it, the more I fell in love with its little flaws 😁
The old me would’ve kept tweaking it forever, but now I think: let’s leave the fixes for the next one.
These imperfections actually make this the perfect first entry in the series—they’re unrepeatable.
Even the footage was special: it’s the first time Qunyu recorded a ride using my mic setup! 📹
I remember this video was shot in May, when we casually rode out to Huazhong Flower Clock.
We weren’t planning to record anything specific—just a test.
He ended up looping around the clock plaza while I had no idea where he went 😂
When he came back and showed me the footage, I was like: “This is perfect—we can totally use this!”
I already had the music forming in my head.
Qunyu’s riding style has always struck me as kind of funny and lovable 😜
And this whole clip captured exactly that energy.
There was even a cleaning lady in the background who unknowingly added a bit of comedic timing.
Since he was riding a flat-bar bike that day and using a mic, we captured less wind noise—and what was left were lovely retro-sounding ratchets and loose, aged mechanical textures.
The stone path at the Flower Clock turned this into our own “Huazhong–Roubaix.” 😆
About the Bike Sounds:
If Qunyu handles the shifter and I just play piano, that’s too expected.
This time, I wanted to reverse roles—just like when I first got into cycling and he taught me everything.
Now it’s my turn to guide him into music 🎵
For the shifters, he brought three types, but for this video, we used a 2008 SRAM 10-speed from @sramroad.
It’s super lightweight, with more carbon fiber than Shimano at the time, giving it a slightly more mid-heavy tone compared to Shimano’s aluminum-heavy sound.
It was also lighter and snappier than Shimano’s top-tier groupsets of the time.
The bell is a handmade Spurcycle Original Bell (@spurcycle)—
its tone is loud but not sharp, resonant but not aggressive.
A friendly chime, not an angry one.
As for the bottle shaker, I filled an @alpecincycling @alpecindeceuninck water bottle with tiny bike parts like screws and valve caps to create a DIY percussive effect.
Mixing:
Jack helped me split the frequency ranges of the rhythmic mechanical sounds, then panned them left and right to add motion.
At the same time, he used compression to glue the chaotic bike noises into a tighter groove—
otherwise, the rhythm might’ve just gone completely off the rails 😂 一直想嘗試的音樂類型之五 Cycling Music,這些想嘗試系列快變成逼自己固定練琴和運動的創作系列了😂,不得不說這個單車系列是裡面最難做的,花了較多時間測試和修改才做出這個原型版本,謝謝群育和子傑陪我胡搞瞎搞😆,很多環節其實都還可以再優化,但看很多遍之後,卻越來越喜歡這些小瑕疵😁,如果是以前的我一定會再繼續改,但現在覺得要改留到下一支再改就好,目前這些小瑕疵都是作為這系列第一支影片最適合的元素,之後也很難再錄出來了,就連騎車影片也是我第一次帶麥克風去騎車群育所錄的📹~
