Never give up easily—only by pushing to the end can you truly see what you’re capable of.

The Eastbound Wuling KOM Challenge is a brutally honest way to reflect on yourself. This year was tough—physically and mentally. I had a smooth ride last time, which made me overconfident. I underestimated the prep I needed, relied too much on indoor training due to work, barely rode outside, and didn’t adapt to my new Canyon Aeroad. As a result, poor balance, weak stabilizing muscles, and wasted energy all piled up. I got completely schooled by Wuling. Almost DNF’d at 8 hours. Every photo spot was already shut down—only caught one awkward shot, which honestly matched the mood 🫠.

Still, I hit my three pre-race goals:

  1. Finish and earn the medal

  2. Capture the stunning ride with my GoPro

  3. Finally get that photo with the Wuling arch in full MVDP kit and my bike “凰呀”

Now, it’s on to this weekend’s Double Tower 520—my last race of the year. I promised @j_ack0831 we’d make up for last year’s unfinished business. This time, we have one goal: Finish together.

—Race Story—

This year’s KOM had 700 riders, the most ever, and only 65 didn’t finish. At the first aid station, I was so late there was no water left. By the final brutal 10K at Dayuling, I was cooked. Thoughts of quitting kept coming: “You’re out of time anyway… you already finished it in March… just come back next time.”

That’s when I ran into Vince from the Philippines, who had encouraged me earlier. I told him I might not make it. He just said, “You will. Let’s finish together.” My earphones died, so I took them off and just rode—breathing, suffering, and sharing occasional encouragement.

With 3K left, the sweep vehicle showed up and told us to stop. I assumed it was over. But then Vince rode past, ignoring the sweep. That fired me up—I jumped back on my bike and rode too. I almost gave up… but no way was I stopping with just 3K to go. At the finish line, the gate was already closed. Vince and I congratulated each other, thinking we were too late.

Later that night, he found me on IG. At midnight, we saw the results—we had both made the time limit by seconds. Dead last, but we made it! Huge thanks to @vloc15—without him, I would’ve carried a heavy regret. Taiwan KOM Challenge 2023 Overall Ranking 633/700, Hualien ➡️WuLing 105KM 3275M
