Overall Ranking: 4,392 / 8,262

Avg. Power: 225W (3.1W/kg @ 72kg)

Gave it everything I had—paced right on the limit, heart rate held steady, and only felt cramps creeping in during the final quarter. Though I missed the Bronze Ring by 9 minutes, it was still better than all my training sessions on the trainer. No regrets, just not trained enough—Bronze Ring becomes the next goal 💪🏻

9 minutes might sound small, but in this race, every minute of improvement is brutal. To earn a Bronze Ring, you need to be in the top 40% (under 1:30), which is no joke 😮‍💨

Race Highlights:

Never imagined I’d get to ride inside Fuji Speedway 🥹

Not on the track itself, but riding through the venue with real engine sounds in the background was surreal—especially while listening to Penthouse – “Live in This Way.”

My goal was clear: Bronze Ring. Based on research, I’d need sub-4h Wuling KOM power—essentially 3.1–3.2W/kg from start to finish, and try to draft when possible.

I planned to do a training block a month before, but work got intense and I didn’t train nearly enough. On top of that, the weather forecast said cold and rain at the summit (6°C)—of course it had to be hard mode 😵

Race Day:

Woke up to 12°C and—surprise—no rain! Everyone was nervous at the start. Eddie, who wasn’t racing, still came to ride with us and send us off.

Warm-up section was chill… until I saw the Rouvy-style timing gate and instantly exploded with excitement—sprinted the first 500m solo 😂 so much for “riding together”!

First half went great: heart rate at 168 bpm, hit 650m elevation gain in 45 minutes. Thought I still had a chance at Bronze.

But the second half? Brutal. Every time I took a drink, I’d lose the draft and fall behind. Gotta fix this next time.

Final quarter (300m climb left): cramps starting. But just then, the sun came out—blue skies, warmer temps, and my body stopped wasting energy fighting the cold. That gave me just enough to keep going.

Fans started shouting “Mathieu!” (cosplaying MVDP 😆), not sure if they were cheering me on, but it sure felt like it.

At the 1:29 mark, I knew Bronze was out, so I took out my phone to capture the beautiful final stretch. Still pushed hard to finish under 1:40.

The Downhill:

The descent was the real boss.

Not long after starting, rain turned into hail—WTF!?

Windbreakers useless, temps dropped close to 0°C, and with too many riders, we couldn’t descend fast enough to stay warm.

24km of freezing, shivering misery—way worse than the climb. 🥶

Finally got back, soaked to the bone. Thank god for hot udon at the finish—life-saving. Our last teammate eventually arrived with a heartwarming story: he told the sweep van, “My friends are waiting—I’m going to find them.” 🥹 That melted all of us, even through the cold.

Post-Race:

We rushed back to the lodge, stripped off our soaked clothes, threw them in the tub, and headed out to celebrate at Sanrokuen with hot grill and beer 🍻

Then hot springs and more drinks back at the lodge. A perfect ending to a totally unforgettable day.
